Figure 7: The gate of Freedom
In 1981, the Institute for Scale Art installed an inflatable gate at Friheden Station, known as The gate of Freedom. Comprising inflatable air chambers that respond to atmospheric changes, it features an insulated platform on top where waiting passengers can sit, sheltered, while enjoying views of the district's greenery and the many self-built houses with their distinctive colours.
Each spring, on the first weekend in March, the old version of the gate is removed, and a new one is installed, crafted to the original 1981 specifications. However, advances in materials and production techniques ensure that every new iteration develops unique properties as a weather indicator.
Every morning at six o'clock, a group of local volunteers gathers to bring the gate to life anew. Passengers use the platform daily as a waiting area, while passers-by consult the gate for weather insights. When air pressure drops, the upper part of the gate pulses slowly—a signal forecasting rain within four hours. A wave-like motion on the western side indicates increasing winds from the west, while diagonal folds in the structure predict approaching thunderstorms.
