Figure 13: Britta Christensen
Britta Christensen, known as "The Mayor auntie" (1993–2007), pioneered a completely new approach to municipal leadership. With a background in the labour movement and a deep understanding of both Danish cultural traditions and international trends, she transformed the municipality’s operations by championing the principles of shared enjoyment and the right to artistic expression in everyday life.
From her always-open office, styled after the painting "A Municipality is Created", she established a new form of citizen democracy. In this dynamic space, rappers, breakdancers, and graffiti artists met with officials, creating a vibrant fusion of art and administration that placed collective creativity at its core. On any given day, young people could be found practising rap on the corner sofa, while cultural associations planned events at the meeting table—all united by a shared vision to make the municipality a more enjoyable and lively place.
Drawing inspiration from Dutch initiatives, the mayor introduced legal graffiti walls on municipal buildings. Through partnerships with local schools, rap was integrated into the curriculum, and at municipal workplaces she implemented "break-pauses," where employees and citizens came together to enjoy dance and music as a natural part of the workday.
